The state of Southeast Asia: 2020 survey report
Published by the ASEAN Studies Centre at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, this report contains the results of The State of Southeast Asia survey conducted in late 2019. The findings indicate that while China is seen as the most influential strategic power in the region, 71.9% of respondents are also worried about its expanding influence. A majority of respondents from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand also prefer China over the United States.

According to the ASEAN Integration Report 2019, compiled by the ASEAN Secretariat, China has been ASEAN’s largest external trading partner since 2009, with bilateral trade reaching USD 483.1 billion in 2018. Foreign direct investment from China to ASEAN also reached USD 10.2 billion in 2018.
